The Mind Gym's Academic Prize

Trophy

And the winner is...

It's been an exciting year for positive psychology and we received hundreds of entries from across the world. Our Academic Board of judges had their work cut out for them, but they whittled it down to four finalists.

That's where you came in. You voted in your thousands and have crowned Professor Kennon Sheldon and Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky winners of the £5,000 top prize, for their research on how to be happy. Watch their winning
video below.

Congratulations from all at The Mind Gym.

What will make me happy?

Is it even possible to become a happier person?

Changing our activities (what we do) gives us a chance to keep having lots of positive experiences and making new memories. Unfortunately, changing our circumstances (what we have) doesn’t work so well: we adapt to and stop noticing our circumstances, so the stream of positive experiences shuts off.

Take-home message: to become happier, start doing something new. If you do it well, and also vary how, when, and where you do it, you can gain lasting benefits.

Professor Kennon Sheldon (University of Missouri – Columbia, USA)
Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky (University of California – Riverside, USA)

An earlier version of this research was published in 2006 in the Journal of Happiness Studies (volume 7, pp. 55-86). Additional data forms this prize entry and an as yet unpublished book chapter.
