Many of us imagine that love, lucre, lazy days on a sun drenched beach and a beautiful body (at least lying next to us) will bring happiness. Alas, it won’t, at least not for long.

The research reveals some surprising secrets:

  • It’s common to be stuck on the hedonistic treadmill, but earning more money (after £20,000) doesn’t affect how happy we are.
  • We are three times more likely to find happiness at work than in the rest of our life.
  • Simply by being paid to do something we tend to enjoy it less, even if it’s exactly the same activity.
  • Most people imagine having time to themselves will make them happier but it’s the other way round – busy people win out.
