Participant reviews
A recent study asked a group of hospital cleaners to describe how they saw what they did for a living. Answers ranged from ‘cleaning floors for minimum wage’ through to ‘helping save lives’.
The researchers placed responses into three categories: job, career and calling. A job was done purely for financial gain; work to live rather than live to work. A career focused on progression and development. A calling had a sense of purpose to it; people were passionate and highly involved in what they did.
People with a calling were happier, had fewer sick days, were more likely to recommend what they did to others and had a greater sense of life satisfaction.
However, just having a purpose alone doesn’t seem to be enough to create lasting satisfaction. Further research by positive psychologists found that by playing to our character strengths we can enhance purpose to create an explosively satisfying recipe.
In 90 minutes you will have
- An understanding of your strengths.
- Found ways to apply those strengths in your current role.
- Created a plan to ease the inevitable downsides of a job.
- Discovered how to create meaning in the role you have.
- Thought through a plan to enhance purpose in what you do.
This workout combines creating a calling with using character strengths to create an occupation which makes you want to leap out of bed in the morning.
