Hare brain, tortoise mind

Eureka! Archimedes’ solution came to him whilst relaxing in a bath. Leo Szillard discovered the answer to nuclear fusion whilst waiting in a traffic light.

It seems like a paradox that the best way to solve a problem can be to stop thinking about it. It is also true.

Our greatest creative leaps tend to occur when our active mind is distracted and we aren’t making too much effort to come up with an answer. However, a bit like trying to go to sleep, it can be much harder not to concentrate on a pressing issue than it is to let our mind wander and see where it takes us.

The challenge is to define the right level of distraction to let your thoughts drift and sufficient courage to give your tortoise mind free rein. After all, we know who won the race.
